WHAT IS PLAQUEAWAY®?

PlaqueAway® is a powder that is added to your pet’s food to improve oral health by reducing plaque and tartar on your pet’s teeth.

WHAT ARE PLAQUE AND TARTAR?

Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms on teeth of humans and animals. The formation of plaque is a normal process. Plaque continues to form on teeth every day.

Plaque gradually becomes hardened by minerals in saliva to form tartar (also called calculus). Tartar is often stained brown or pale yellow.

The accumulation of plaque and tartar results in poor oral health because it is commonly associated with gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) and tooth loss in animals.

Gingivitis is when gums become irritated and inflamed. Periodontitis is more severe and is when there is a loss of the connective tissue fibres that attach the teeth to the gums, and of the bone surrounding the teeth. The gums pull away from the teeth and form ‘pockets’ that become infected.

WHAT IS PLAQUEAWAY® MADE OF?

PlaqueAway® powder is made from Ascophyllum nodosum which is a seaweed that grows in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Ascophyllum nodosum powder in PlaqueAway® is sourced from the pristine waters of northern Norway.

HOW DOES PLAQUEAWAY® WORK?

There are many compounds present in seaweed and the exact compound or compounds that reduce the plaque on teeth have not been clearly identified. However, they appear to be absorbed via the intestines into the blood and then move into saliva where they act on plaque and tartar in the mouth.

As well as reducing the formation of plaque and tartar, PlaqueAway causes the tartar to stick less well to the teeth and to be softer.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT PLAQUEAWAY® WILL WORK?

A clinical trial has been conducted in dogs and cats which shows that Acophyllum nodosum reduces plaque and calculus. For the scientifically minded, the relevant publication is: Gawor, J., Jodkowska, K. and Jank, M. (2013) Effects of an ascophyllum nodosum formulation on oral health index in dogs and cats. Weterynaria w Praktyce (Veterinary Medicine in Practice) Magazine Issue 10 p74. Poland.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PLAQUEAWAY®?

Poor oral health is a major cause of bad breath. If your pet has stinky breath, it is likely that an improvement in oral health through the use of PlaqueAway® will help.

Since a build-up of tartar can lead to gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) and tooth loss in animals, your vet will need to mechanically remove it from your pet’s teeth from time to time. Your pet may need to be sedated or anaesthetised for this to be done. Using PlaqueAway® will reduce the amount of work that your vet needs to do to remove the tartar and reduce how often this needs to be done.

In periodontitis, any infection in gums can spread to other organs in the body and cause serious disease.

HOW LONG BEFORE THE BENEFITS OF PLAQUEAWAY® ARE OBSERVED?

The benefits of PlaqueAway® should be evident after 6-8 weeks of use.

If your pet starts losing its teeth, it is really too late to act. Start now to prevent this from happening to your pet.
